SUMMARY:Harmonica for Confident Beginner with Hyllus - A Four-Week Group Cl
 ass
DESCRIPTION:A Four-Week Group Class with Hyllus \nSkill level: Confident be
 ginnerMondays\, 6:30-7:45 pm: 6/22\, 6/29\, 7/6 and 7/20\nThis 4 week cour
se is suitable for confident beginners who know the basics from our previo
us classes or from their own past experience\, or for anyone who has yet t
o master all of the basics of playing the harmonica. We'll focus on the mo
re difficult "draw" notes\, go over basic music theory as it applies to th
e harmonica\, spend more time on bending notes\, learn the different "posi
tions" on the harmonica\, and much more. \nIf you've been struggling with
these or any other basic techniques on the harmonica\, this is an excellen
t opportunity to develop your skills and get your questions answered. By t
he end of the course\, students will have cultivated a solid foundation fo
r a lifetime of exploring and enjoying making music with the harmonica.\n\
nRequired Materials: A 10-hole\, Richter-tuned diatonic harmonica (that is
\, the standard harmonica with which most of us are familiar) in the key o
f C will be required for this course. An additional harmonica in the key o
f G is suggested but not required. Students are also encouraged to bring t
o class any other keys they may already own\, the more the better. If purc
hasing new\, the Hohner 1896 Marine Band is recommended.\n\nHyllus is a Ne
w York City guitarist\, singer\, and harmonica player specializing in both
electric and acoustic harmonica styles. He studied extensively in Boston
with blues legends Annie Raines (harmonica) and Paul Rishell (guitar)\, in
addition to harmonica studies with Trip Henderson and Marcus Millius (New
York) and the great Jason Ricci (of New Orleans). He has performed harmon
ica on stage with many of New York City’s finest jazz\, folk and blues m
usicians\, including: Charlie Apicella and Iron City\; JJ Appleton\; Miss
Maybell and Charlie Judkins\; The Milkman & Sons\; Ernie “Papa” Vega
’s Dream Shadows\; Jackson Lynch & The Janks\; Chris Murphy & The Automa
t\; Felix Slim\; Karl Schwarz of New Moon Acoustic Blues\; Bill Carney’s
Jug Addicts\; and many more. As a solo performer\, in addition to his tra
ditional solo harmonica repertoire\, Hyllus sings and plays guitar primari
ly in the style of the pre-war acoustic blues\, with a smattering of world
and folk music besides.\n\n*For financial aid email lynette@jalopytheatre

nd different tunes? Come and try this class with Ercan Alkan. Once carried
from town to town by wandering bards\, the Bağlama (commonly called the
saz) is still the core of Turkish folk music and even modern Anatolian ps

atch. Each week\, we will introduce fundamental techniques for playing thi
s Anatolian lute through the study of classic Turkish folk songs. Start to

SUMMARY:Leonie Evans / The Deslondes / Chris Acker
DESCRIPTION:Doors 8pm\, Show 8:30pm\n$25 adv / $30 dos\n\nJoin us for the i
nimitable Leonie Evans' New York Debut! With support from The Deslondes an
 d Chris Acker. \n\nLeonie Evans is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-song
writer from South East London. With a passion for History and music from a
cross the world she sings in multiple languages and also performed Jazz\,
blues\, country\, gospel and folk with various bands. Performing since th
 e age of 5\, she's toured extensively across the UK\, Europe\, Japan\, and
the USA\, cultivating a wide-ranging family of musicians. \n\nHer albums
 Collaborations Vol.1 & Vol.2 \, features a different band for every track
and the focus of the project is to record and connect musicians she encoun
ters along her musical journey. She's also worked with Blasting Company on
soundtracks for animations featured on HBO\, Cartoon Network\, and Adult
Swim.\n\nDescribed by Cerys Matthews (BBC Radio 6) as “like nothing else
I’ve ever heard in my life… I was just blown away with her.”\n\nWhe
n The Deslondes recorded their new covers album\, they didn’t want to si
mply exalt their heroes and catalog their influences. They wanted to give
their friends a boost as well. The poignant and powerful Don’t Let It Di
e Vol. 1 includes new interpretations of old songs by artists who’ve gui
ded the band for years\, including Swamp Dogg\, Johnny Cash\, and Clifton
 Chenier\, alongside new songs by peers\, tourmates\, and collaborators\, i
ncluding Nick Woods\, Pat Reedy\, and the Kernel. “We have so many frien
ds who are songwriters\, and we just love their music so much\,” says Jo
hn James Tourville\, who plays guitar and occasionally the fiddle. “Rile
y and Dan are always kicking around awesome\, inspiring old songs for us t
o do\, but for this album we really wanted to do some friend songs\, too.
”\n\nDon’t Let It Die maps out a community of likeminded musicians giv
en to hopping trains\, crowding tour vans\, and blurring the lines between
styles and scenes. “These songs are very much a close part of our lives
\,” says Riley Downing\, who sings and usually plays guitar. “They’r
e all part of our circle\, this big organism that keeps influencing itself
. It’s mysterious\, though\, which musicians get heard and which ones do
n’t. I think we’re in a good position to tip our cap to the friends we
look up to\, and hopefully it will benefit our buddies. Hopefully this al
bum will encourage people to go down those rabbit holes.”\n\nIn a genre
full of tall tales and marketable lies\, Chris Acker crafts candid songs
 – weaving his wit and woes into a body of work that exposes the stale pl
ight of the American Songster to the honest\, and sometimes hilarious\, li
ght of day.\n\nSince leaving his childhood home of Seattle\, Washington\,
Chris Acker has called the haggard decadence of the New Orleans Americana
world his purlieu. In the tradition of Guthrie and Prine\, Chris lends a q
uavering voice to the half-rotten romance of the unremarkable and unrefine
 d. Regardless if you’re sitting by a backyard fire on a muggy Louisiana
night or standing stage-side in some far flung town\, when you hear Chris
Acker playing\, you’re hearing the end result of countless hours of obse
rving the masters of the craft…and the end result of repeating their mis
 takes.\n\nSome hard-times don’t happen behind plows\, they happen behind
dish-pits and cash registers. Some ramblers don’t feel the hot breath o
f freedom\, just the smell of car exhaust and a couch for a bed. From the
folk revival through the golden age of country music\, deafened by punk sh
ows and brass bands alike\, Chris’s songwriting is a nod to the absurd y
et muted brilliance that inhabits the molded corners of the bars he patron
s and cratered street he treads\, paired with a pained honesty that merits
a long second look.\n\nWe're so excited for this very special show! Get y
our tickets ahead of time!\n\nGeneral Admission: $28.00\nDay of Show Price

SUMMARY:Moe Reen / Kyle Morgan & Ellie MacPhee
DESCRIPTION:Doors 8pm\, Show 8:30pm\n$20 adv / $25 dos\n\nOhio-based (and b
orn and raised) country-folk songsmith Moe Reen writes from the heart\, fo
r the heart. A lifelong vocalist\, their old-school country voice often ga
rners comparisons to Patsy Cline\, Hank Williams\, and other honky-tonk-he
artbreak crooners of yesteryear. Moe’s witty lyrics\, however\, are dist
inctly modern. The songs on their debut EP\, Grow Again (April 2024) inclu
de a finger-picking reflection on the malaise of seasonal depression along
side a slow-dancing lament comparing climate deniers and unrequited lovers
. Moe’s marriage of sentimental sound with contemporary sentiment produc
es something distinctly their own: earnest lyrics cradled by melodies that
tenderly soar to tend to the sore\, soft spots of us all.\n\nKyle Morgan
 is a Brooklyn-based songwriter originally from Dillsburg\, Pennsylvania\,
where he grew up singing with his family at church and home. With influen
ces ranging from the classic roots music of the Carter Family and Hank Wil
liams to more modern artists like Thom Yorke and Rufus Wainwright\, Kyle s
ings songs of spiritual longing\, struggle and redemption in an earnest te
nor voice. He released three albums in the twenty-teens under the name Sta
rcrossed Losers. In 2022\, his debut solo album\, Younger at Most Everyth
ing\, came out on Team Love Records. His new LP\, Ghost of a Problem\, co

SUMMARY:Jordan Wax + Jake Shulman-Ment
DESCRIPTION:$20 Advance / $25 DOS\n8:00pm Doors / 8:30pm Show\n\nHitting th
e road together for the first time\, Jordan Wax and Jake Shulman-Ment draw
from many combined decades as bearers and innovators of klezmer and Yiddi
sh song. They masterfully traverse oceans and centuries to conjure ancestr
al melodies and songs\, landing in a playfully genre-bending 21st century
America. \nTheir live performance\, rich with musical virtuosity as well a
s the oral history and lore that connects their music to centuries of cult
ure\, is a testament to the magic that has sustained secular Yiddish creat
ivity in the face of incredible odds and continues to shed a unique light
on the contemporary human condition.\nBorn in New York City\, violinist Ja
ke Shulman-Ment is “considered one of the finest klezmer fiddlers on the
planet” (Jon Kalish\, NPR). He has toured and recorded internationally
as a soloist and with Midwood\, Daniel Kahn\, Frank London\, Di Naye Kapel
 ye\, Joey Weisenberg\, Laurel Premo\, Romashka\, Duncan Sheik\, and many o
thers. He was featured in Csaba Bereczki's full-length documentary film So
ul Exodus\, and performed on screen in HBO's Succession and Martin Scorces

ion\, Jake has been a faculty member of KlezKamp\, KlezKanada\, Klezmer Pa
ris\, the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival\, Yiddish Summer Weimar\, Fiddle
Tunes\, Yiddish New York\, and other festivals throughout the globe. He co
llected\, studied\, performed\, and documented traditional music in Romani
a as a Fulbright scholar\, and has lived and traveled in Hungary and Greec
e\, learning traditional violin styles. In 2018 he received the prestigiou
 s NYSCA/NYFA Fellowship in Folk/Traditional Arts. Jake's debut solo album\
 , A Redele (A Wheel) (Oriente Musik\, 2012) was nominated for the German R
ecord Critics' Award. His most recent release\, Two Strings (Borscht Beat\

le style with Abigale Reisman.www.jakeshulmanment.com\nJordan Wax is a son
gwriter from New Mexico who performs dynamic arrangements of new work in Y
iddish. His innovative compositions are rooted his own deep Diaspora commu
nities and in three decades of friendships with elders who have imparted t
he subtleties of spoken secular Yiddish and the musical sensibilities of t
he professional klezmer–not as heirlooms to be preserved\, but as pathwa
ys to Yiddish continuity\, vitality\, and relevance which must be renewed
in each generation through radical creativity and cross-cultural pollinati
on with the rhythms of Yiddish’s diasporic homes. The linguistic and mu
sical dialects of his work align his original songs with stories and embod
ied memories that span generations. His debut solo album\, The Heart Deci
phers (Borscht Beat\, 2025)\, blends the sounds of klezmer/lautari ensembl
es from Moldova with rock aesthetics from the American Southwest and was f
ollowed by Pantakozak and Other New Yiddish Songs for Kids\, an offering f

DESCRIPTION:Early Show\nTickets: $35\nDoors: 6:30pm Show: 7:00pm\nLongevity
in music comes through pushing yourself and expanding the possibilities o
f your sound. This has never been more true for Copeland on their latest e
ffort Blushing\, a collection of 11 new tracks that advance and evolve eve
rything the trio of musicians has done up until now. The band\, which orig
inally formed in Lakeland\, Florida in 2001\, has unveiled six albums\, sp
anning from their 2003’s debut Beneath Medicine Tree to 2016’s Ixora.
While they began as a rock band\, Copeland’s music has explored multiple
genres and pulled in various stylistic influences like electronic and sym
phonic. In the past the musicians have aptly melded these styles\, creatin
g a unique amalgam of sounds. This time they wanted to take each sound and
style and push it to its logical extreme.\n\n“We wanted to take all of
the elements that made up our sound in the past and push those elements fa
rther\,” Aaron says. “So rock becomes more rock than we’ve been in t
he past. If we’ve taken elements of symphonic tones\, let’s now be ver
y symphonic. When we’re being electronic\, be very electronic. We wanted
to emphasize each element of sound harder\, like an exaggerated version o
f Copeland’s sound. We could be each thing individually by pushing each
facet of our art in a more focused way.”\n\nGENERAL ADMISSION: $38.00
