ek course is for anyone who has yet to master all of the basics of playing
the harmonica. We'll cover learning simple melodies\, how to play clean s
ingle notes\, using our hands to shape tone\, different musical modes\, h
ow to bend notes\, and much more. \nIf you've been struggling with these o
r any other basic techniques on the harmonica\, this is an excellent oppor
tunity to develop your skills and get your questions answered. If you're b
rand new to the harmonica\, this is the perfect way to get started. By the
end of the course\, students will have cultivated a solid foundation for
a lifetime of exploring and enjoying making music with the harmonica.\n\nR
 equired Materials: A 10-hole\, Richter-tuned diatonic harmonica (that is\,
the standard harmonica with which most of us are familiar) in the key of
C will be required for this course. An additional harmonica in the key of
G is suggested but not required. Students are also encouraged to bring to
class any other keys they may already own\, the more the better. If purcha
sing new\, the Hohner 1896 Marine Band is recommended.\n\nHyllus is a New

lectric and acoustic harmonica styles. He studied extensively in Boston wi
th blues legends Annie Raines (harmonica) and Paul Rishell (guitar)\, in a

SUMMARY:Train Imitations & Fox Chases with Hyllus - A Four-Week Harmonica G

DESCRIPTION:A Four-Week Group Class with Hyllus\nSkill level: Confident beg
 inner to IntermediateMondays\, 8:00-9:15 pm: 4/6\, 4/13\, 4/27\, and 5/4\n
\nIn this 4-week course\, students will learn to play one of the most enjo
yable and creative pieces in the repertoire of American harmonica music: t
he musical imitation of the steam engine. Musicians have created this effe
ct in a variety of ways over the last century of harmonica recordings. We'
ll spend time exploring as many of them as we can\, and learning to master
these techniques ourselves. By the end of the course\, students will be p
laying their own versions of a steam engine imitation piece from start to
finish\, including imitatingthe ways the train pulls into the station\, bo
ards its passengers\, leaves the station\, and then speeds along toward th
e next one. In the final week\, we'll spend time with a similar type of so
ng as well\, the fox chase\, which shares some of the same playing techniq
ues and oftenoverlaps with steam engine pieces. Some of these songs may so
und complex\, but many of them take advantage of very simple illusions tha
t once mastered can really take your playing to the next level\, no matter
what style of music you may play otherwise. A wide range of players\, fro
m those who have only recently mastered the basics to those who have been
playing for many years\, will find this course both exciting and illuminat
ing. This course represents a rare opportunity for players to engage with
a classic harmonica tradition in a supportive group setting and under the
guidance of a contemporary practitioner of the form.\n\nRequired Materials
 : A 10-hole\, Richter-tuned diatonic harmonica (that is\, the standard har

SUMMARY:Songs I Learned From Jim Kweskin - A Four-Session Class with Samoa
 Wilson
DESCRIPTION:A Four-Session Sing Along Class with Samoa WilsonTuesdays\, 7:0
 0 - 8:15pm: 4/21\, 4/28\, 5/12\, 5/19All voices welcome!\n\nIf you’ve ev
er wanted to take part in the oral tradition of folk music\, this sing alo
ng group is for you. I grew up learning songs at the knee of my uncle Jim
Kweskin\, the founder of the legendary 1960's Jim Kweskin Jug Band. He wou
ld gather a bunch of us kids and little cousins around\, and teach us musi
c from folk traditions all over the United States. Each week\, we’ll le
arn a new (old) number from the repertoire I learned from my uncle as a ch
ild. We’ll discuss the history and the context of the song\; the legacy
of the artist: and then dig into the endorphins created through group sin
ging.Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned singer\, this group
is for you. All are welcome.\nWe are excited to enlarge our community and
nurture our students\, in that spirit\, we are happy to offer a 10% discou
nt for returning students!\n*For financial aid email: lynette@jalopytheatr
e.org.\nAbout the teaching artist:\nSince she was 12 years old\, Samoa Wil
son has been captivating audiences with a voice the New York Times calls
“sweet\, effortless\, old-timey.” Raised in the riverbed of traditiona
l North American folk music\, she came up in the Boston scene\, under the
wing of jug band and folk legend Jim Kweskin. Her two duos\, The Four O’
Clock Flowers\, and Fatboy Wilson & Old Viejo Bones\, have become staples
of the thriving New York City folk community. Additionally her vintage jaz
z trio has been filling ears with material from the golden era of 20’s &
30’s musical treasure\, a sound at once bluesier and more contemporary
than expected. Her choice of repertoire makes the difference: torchy and h
oneyed renditions of haunting little-known tunes\, from a woman’s perspe
ctive. From the source of the traditional and classic material\, she poses
a modern complaint\, salutes the transformation of women’s work and suf
 fering into women’s triumph.\n\nRegistration for Class: $190.00

melts\, spring gradually emerges\, and the warm weather returns! Every s

technique with the goal of feeling free\, open\, and ready to sing. We'll

combination of ear training\, picking out harmonies by ear\, singing songs
from different US and world harmony traditions\, improvising harmonies in
the moment\, and incorporating tips for vocal technique that help us make
the music really sing.\n\nThere will be some notation for learning purpos
es\, although reading music is not required. This class is ideal for peopl
e who would like some vocal tips and technique ideas\, want to improve the
ir ear-training skills and harmony chops\, love to sing with others\, or w
ho just want to sing! Designed for beginning through intermediate-level si
ngers\, but will be tailored to offer something for everyone.\nFor this ro
und\, we'll do a mix of new songs and familiar favorites\, with some deepe
r dives into a few songs we can really polish and even work on in small gr
oups for those who are comfortable. If we've worked on a song before that
you'd love to sing again\, let Emily know at emily@jalopytheatre.org.\n\nW

SUMMARY:Mike Agranoff House Show at 319 Columbia Street!
DESCRIPTION:Doors 6:30pm\, Show 7pm\nSliding Scale starting at $20\n\nThis
will be the first ever acoustic concert presented at Jalopy's new space at
319 Columbia Street!\nMike takes the notion that Folk Music is passe or b
oring\, and blows that all to Kingdom Come. He presents an intelligent and
highly entertaining program of songs\, tunes\, stories and humor. Mike pl
ays a superb fingerstyle guitar in idioms ranging from traditional fiddle
tunes to the American Songbook to contemporary Americana. He is a master o
f the little-known English Concertina\, applying it anywhere from a haunti
ng and poignant song accompaniment to an unexpected virtuoso transcription
of a Bach concerto. A performance might include a song of heart-stopping
emotional impact\, an acapella Irish patter song sung to the melody of a m
ile-a-minute fiddle tune\, a riveting recitation in the style of Robert Se
rvice\, and some of the most horrible parodies ever perpetrated on an unsu
 specting audience. More a singer-songfinder than a singer-songwriter\, Mik
e combs the canon of contemporary and traditional songs for little-known g
ems\, puts his unique stamp on them\, and brings them to the stage.\n\nIf
you've been around the folk scene at all in the Northeast\, you've probabl
y seen him. He's that tall guy with the red beard and the leather fisherma
n's cap. And when the music starts\, he's in the middle of it all\, adding
to the chorus and probably knowing all the lyrics. His repertoire is vast
and varied. Mike is not only a collector of songs and a master at arrangi
ng them\, but is also a writer of songs and recitations. He has a keen ear
for the best of the best\, and this only enhances his own writing. If you
're looking for an alternative to the endless stream of singer songwriters
who write for the market\, Mike's your man. He makes us laugh\, cry and t
hink\, all the while entertaining us long into any evening of music.\n\nGe

SUMMARY:Mama's Broke / Jude Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Doors 8pm\, Show 8:30pm\n$20 adv / $25 dos\n\nMama’s Broke ha
ve spent over a decade in a near-constant state of transience\, pounding t
he transatlantic tour trail. They've brought their dark\, fiery folk-witho
ut-borders sound to major festivals and DIY punk houses alike\, absorbing
traditions from their maritime home in Eastern Canada all the way to Irela
nd and Indonesia. Nowhere is the duo's art-in-motion approach more apparen
t than on their long-awaited JUNO-nominated sophomore record Narrow Line
(released May 2022 on Free Dirt Records) It's the sound of nowhere in part
icular\, yet woven with a rich synthesis of influences that knows no borde
rs.\n\n The eleven songs on Narrow Line burrow deeply\, with close harmony
duets\, commanding vocals\, and poignant contemplations on cycles of life
\, including birth and death. Tinges of Americana stand side-by-side with
the ghosts of Eastern European fiddle tunes and ancient a cappella ballad
singing\, melding into an unusually accessible dark-folk sound. A careful
listen of Narrow Line invokes an ephemeral sense of place—whether real o
r imagined—inviting us to take comfort in the infinite possibilities of
life\, whether or not we ever choose to settle down. \n\nFor a group defin
ed by constant touring\, it’s not surprising that the two artists that m
ake up Mama’s Broke\, Lisa Maria and Amy Lou Keeler\, met on the road. B
oth coming out of travelling communities that are focused on music and pro
test\, the two owe the way in which they move through the world to the int
egrated and self-sustaining nature of DIY culture and activism. It was a b
usy life that took them on a roundabout annual touring schedule running be
 tween Canada\, the United States\, Ireland\, the UK\, and Europe.\n\nThe d
riving force behind this band is – and has always been – the commitmen
t to challenge borders between people\, places\, and traditions\; while en
couraging freedom of expression and community through music.\n\nJude Broth
ers is a freak folk singer-songwriter from Northwest Arkansas\, inspired b
y the regional folk music of their Ozark home\, while always reaching for
the roots therein and branches thereout. Their sound is an eclectic blend
of traditional sensibilities and contemporary concerns\, a feral strangene
ss and delicate sweetness\, an unnerving ancientness and an endearing naiv
ety - an artist comfortable navigating their own contradictions. Brothers
offers old school folk heads a taste of timelessness\, evocative lyricism\
, and unparalleled vocal stylings over a bed of whirling harp & guitar mel
 odies.\n\nGeneral Admission: $23.00\nDay of Show Price: $28.00

and mentor John Cohen of the New Lost City Ramblers. Their music reflects
and extends the strong feeling and diversity of sounds found on old comme

Hill Strugglers carry forward the sounds of the old\, rural America. \n\n
 The band is:\nJackson Lynch - fiddle\, voice\, guitar\nWalker Shepard - gu

monica\, pump organ\n\n------------\n\nClinton Davis is an old time folk m

s grew up in rural Carroll County. His repertoire spans fiddle and banjo m
usic native to his family home\, the exuberant ragtime piano and guitar of
early 20th-century New Orleans\, and ballad songs and dance music of the
Southwest. \nDavis' concerts are expansive in their mood\, style\, and ins
trumentation\, with his only concern being to communicate the multi-facete
d beauty of American music traditions wherever and however he finds it. A
delicate expression on the banjo might lead to a powerful ragtime stomp on

  saxophone\, flute)\, Yuma Uesaka (soprano saxophone\, clarinet)\, Nate Wo
oley (trumpet)\, Lester St. Louis (cello)\, and Jeff Davis (drumset\, vibr
aphone). The piece is a sprawling\, style-blurring composition that explor
es the many musical worlds Johnson has inhabited over the past fifteen yea
rs\, weaving together elements of jazz\, chamber music\, folk music\, free
improvisation\, and progressive rock.\n\nThe work draws from Johnson’s

med internationally and recorded with artists such as Anthony Braxton\, Ge
ri Allen\, the Daedalus Quartet\, David Grisman\, Tyshawn Sorey\, Mary Hal

eived as a musical ecosystem where diverse influences coexist and interact
\, “Without Fear” highlights the individual voices and abilities of th

le personal work.\n\nAs a lover of comic books\, the piece is inspired by
the Green Lantern\, whose power ring can create anything imaginable throug

languages Johnson inhabits can live together within a single composition.

chael Daves presents a reunion show of the legendary progressive bluegrass

Trischka who co-founded the band in 1973. Daves and bassist Jared Engel ro
und out the ensemble to play original material from BS’s self-titled 197
6 Rounder Records release plus rip-roaring bluegrass standards.\n\nThe thr
ee original Breakfast Special members went on to have highly influential s
olo careers. Tony Trischka\, who NPR calls “the great banjo liberationis
t” is considered the father of progressive bluegrass music. Andy Statman
has become a hero not just in bluegrass music but also in traditional Jew
ish music\, fusing those forms with experimental jazz and improvisation. T
he New York Times calls him “One of the most important Jewish creative a
rtists of the postwar era.” Kenny Kosek has developed a reputation as on

SUMMARY:Sunny War
DESCRIPTION:Doors 8pm\, Show 8:30pm\n$20 adv / $25 dos\n\nWhen Sunny War (a
.k.a. Sydney Ward) moved into her late father’s house in Chattanooga\, s
he thought the place was haunted. “I spent the winter seeing things and
hearing things\,” she says. “The house is 100 years old\, and I was in
there by myself. I could hear people walking around and talking\, but whe
n I jumped out of bed with my machete\, there was nobody there. I assumed
it was my dad\, and I started writing about the ghosts that I was living w
ith.” One of those songs\, simply titled “Ghosts\,” anchors her late
st album\, Armageddon in a Summer Dress. A kind of slithering blues\, driv
en by her spidery guitarwork and haunted by disembodied voices dopplering
in and out as the song fades\, it’s a wise-yet-confused meditation on wh
at it means to live with your memories of the dead and the lost.\n\nSunny
’s house wasn’t haunted\, at least not the way she initially suspected
. “Something broke and I had to fix it\, so I called the gas company eve
n though I didn’t have the money. The guy discovered major gas leaks all
over the house. I thought I was losing my mind\, but I was just hallucina
ting from the gas. After I got that fixed\, I never saw or heard another g
host.” That’s not to say they weren’t there\, just that she could no
longer detect them and no longer had to sleep with a giant knife next to
her bed. But Armageddon is rooted in the disorientation of those hallucina
tions. In songs that are deeply incisive and keenly imaginative\, Sunny po
nders the act of crossing boundaries—between worlds\, between musical ge
nres\, summoning the ghosts of the people she lost\, the people she once w
as\, and the people she was not allowed to be. “Just how to hang on to t
he ones we let go\,” she sings on “Ghosts.” “They’ll be down in
the ground when you need them most and now somehow you believe in ghosts.
 ”\n\nFollowing the release of her 2022 breakthrough\, Anarchist Gospel\,
Sunny spent less and less time at her not-haunted house and more and more
time on the road\, opening for Bonnie Raitt\, Mitski\, Iron & Wine\, and
Sarah Shook & the Disarmers\, among others. When she was back in Chattanoo
ga\, she did her best to stay busy\, lest she lapse back into the drinking
that almost killed her. “If I’m home and not touring\, either I’m g
oing to play music all day or I’m going to get drunk. It’s really one
or the other. I’m just obsessively trying to work on something so that I
’m making healthier decisions that Day.”\n\nSunny spent long days reco
rding elaborate demos\, chasing ideas and assembling whole songs from the
ground up. Some were odd experiments\, a few turned into a long series of
old-time guitar/banjo duets\, and others became the songs on Armageddon in
a Summer Dress. She wrote primarily instrumental tracks and played everyt
 hing herself—guitar of course\, but also bass\, drum loops\, keyboard\,
and anything else she thought the track needed—all with the notion that
she’d add lyrics later. “I want to be a producer\, so I try to make my
own recordings as complete as possible\, trying to get to the point where
I feel confident enough to start recording other people. So I get obsesse
d with my demos. They have to be done just right so I can move on to somet
hing New.”\n\nThe intense demo process allowed her to tinker with new te
xtures\, and she found herself gravitating away from her trusty acoustic g
uitar for an electric. “Touring behind Anarchist Gospel made me want to
make a bigger-sounding record and have a whole band rather than just playi
ng solo acoustic or with a three piece. I wanted to try stuff out of my co
mfort zone and try to have more fun playing. I definitely wanted to make t
his album for a badass five-piece band.”\n\nSongs like the runaway “On
e Way Train” and the lowdown “No One Calls Me Baby” reveal an artist
further refining Sunny’s vibrant mix of punk and roots. “To me it’s
the same kind of music. If you’re into punk for the lyrics and the mess
age\, there’s definitely a lot of old-time music that has that spirit. F
olk used to be very anti-establishment. Pete Seeger\, union songs\, Woody
Guthrie—that’s punk rock shit. It’s all about being an outsider.”
In fact\, she may be the only artist who could host punk stalwarts John Do
e from X and Steve Ignorant from Crass to sing alongside Valerie June and
Tré Burt\, but to her credit\, Sunny disregards any genre boundaries that
might separate them. “They’re all just beatniks. That’s what I’m
calling people now. They’re all different\, but they’re just artists\,
poets. They all have that aesthetic\, in their own way.”\n\nRecruiting
Steve to sing on the anarcho-punk anthem “Walking Contradiction” was a
full-circle moment for Sunny\, who counts Crass among her all-time favori
te bands. She wrote the song especially for him: with its snaking blues me
lody\, ominous organ chords\, and Sunny’s guitar tagging the walls of ci
ty hall\, the song is a smart\, scowling depiction of late-capitalist Amer
ica\, where even the best of us are compromised by a fundamentally evil sy
stem. Their voices suggest a wild chemistry between them\, possibly becaus
e Sunny’s been singing along with Steve for decades. “He’s my hero f
or life. When I started listening to Crass\, it changed everything about h
ow I thought about everything. I dropped out of school because of them\, b
ecause I realized I needed to be playing gigs and writing songs.”\n\nWha
t kind of person would Sunny be had she had never heard Crass? Or Robert J
ohnson? Or any of her heroes? Those mirror-universe Sunnys are just some o
f the ghosts that haunts Armageddon in a Summer Dress: all of those differ
ent selves who would have led different lives. Would she have turned out l
ike the woman in “Lay Your Body Down\,” who misspends her life followi
ng rules and projecting her frustrations onto everyone around her? These s
ongs tally up everything that’s lost as you grow up and grow old\, all o
f those small occurrences that turn out to be pivotal\, and then Sunny fli
ps you the bird on closer “Debbie Downer” for thinking she’s being t
oo dour—“a Negative Nancy\, an infinite frowner.” As dire as these s
ongs may be\, they’re also righteous and therefore joyous in their exhor
tations to live on your own terms\, to fight injustice wherever you see it
\, and to always reach for new ways to express yourself. “I’m still le
arning a lot about everything\,” Sunny confesses. “I’m trying to lea
rn how to be comfortable playing shows\, and there’s still a lot I’m l
earning about guitar in general. I think I’ll be learning forever. Music
is infinite. You can never stop having different combinations. You could
never play everything that could be played on guitar\, and you can never s
ay everything you need to say\, so you can just go on forever learning new
  things.”\n\nGeneral Admission: $23.00\nDay of Show Price: $28.00
