SUMMARY:STEPHANE WREMBEL
DESCRIPTION:Stéphane Wrembel is probably the foremost interpreter of Djang
o Reinhardt’s music in North America. Whether sticking to the French mas
ter’s arrangements\, or taking the music into new territory\, Wrembel ha
s always treated Django like a serious composer rather the cliché paragon
of swing and speed he has often been portrayed as.\nAs a composer\, Stép
hane has scored the theme song to Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" and sc
ored his last film. He performed live for the 2012 Academy Awards\, has h
eadlined at Carnegie Hall and the the Lyon Opera House and has been calle
d “a revelation” by Rolling Stone magazine. \nWhile his playing falls
into the general umbrella of Gypsy Swing his weekly sets also howcase his
own compositions which owe as much to Django Reinhardt as they do Pink Flo
yd\, Ravel or Middle Eastern music. \n\nStephane is at barbes (almost) eve

SUMMARY:SONELIUS SMITH & ADAM KAHAN. Every Saturday in May
DESCRIPTION:Sonelius Smith (piano) and Adam Kahan (bass) and special guests
\nEVERY SATURDAY IN MAY AT 6PM\nSonelius Smith and Adam Kahan started thei
r musical partnership in 2015. Combining roads traveled and untraveled\, w
hat they don’t know and what they haven’t already played\; Smith and K
ahan explore original compositions\, standards\, and some other stuff. On
any given night they are sure to play something wildly beautiful\, compell
ing and familiar\, and then break through the guard rails and drive off a
musical cliff.\n\n----------------\nSonelius Smith is the greatest pianist
you’ve probably never heard. A truly unique artist\, his ideas are more
incendiary than the staunchest avant-gardist (though the avant-garde can
’t claim him). He can also be straight-ahead or even in the pocket (but
the straight-aheaders wouldn’t touch him). Living the music for more tha
n eight decades and hailing from Hillhouse\, Mississippi\, he plays with a
soul and spirit that are intangible. Infused with tradition and history\,
he rejects the expected at every measure. He may be inclined to play a we
ll traveled standard\, but then approach it in such a way that sounds alar
m bells for the Jazz Police. On any given night he’ll play the most beau
tiful unimagined music you’ll ever hear\, produce puzzling even confound
ing passages\, and patiently give space and silence their due. The list of
greats Sonelius has played with is both long and impressive - Kenny Dorha
 m\, Charles Mingus\, Rahsaan Roland Kirk\, Elvin Jones\, Rashied Ali\, Arc
hie Shepp\, Freddie Hubbard\, Shamek Farrah – to name just a few. His co
mpositions have been recorded by greats such as Ahmad Jamal\, David Murray
\, Stanley Cowell\, Robin Kenyatta and others. When not making music\, Son
elius is a prolific painter. Amongst the three pianos in his house\, elect
 ric keyboards\, upright bass\, guitar\, drums\, scores of music… are end
less canvases he’s painted over the years – portraits of Jazz greats s
 uch as Monk and Trane\, abstracts\, nudes\, still lifes\, musical notes\,
you name it. \n*** \nAdam Kahan is a bass player and filmmaker who has bee
n collaborating with Sonelius Smith for over 10 years\, and in many differ
ent forms. They first started working together\, with saxophonist/flutist
Clare Daly\, writing and recording music for film. This led to the three w
orking as a trio playing regularly in New York. Adam then formed and led t
he Lo-Fly sextet which featured Smith on piano\, Daly on baritone\, Ray Sc
ro on baritone and soprano\, Nana Sakomoto on trombone and Dwayne Cook Bro
adnax on drums. Adam also worked with pianist David Durrah for multiple ye
ars\, up until his death in 2021.\n\nAs a filmmaker\, Adam has made docume
ntaries on Rahsaan Roland Kirk (how he first met Sonelius)\, Buster Willia
ms\, Andres Serrano\, Fred Tomaselli\, narrative and experimental shorts a
s well.\n$20 suggested\nDonate here in advance or in person during the per

DESCRIPTION:GILI YALO and his band combine traditional Ethiopian music with
Soul\, Funk\, Psychedelic and Jazz music\, accompanied by Gili’s unique
voice with lyrics in both English and Amharic.\nThe music made by Gili Ya

These Ethiopian Jews fled from their native land on foot to refugee camps
in Sudan.\n\nTogether with his family\, Gili Yalo made this perilous trip

 band is made up of five musicians\, including guitar\, bass\, keyboard\, d
rums\, and trumpet. An entrancing rhythmic motion is apparent when listeni

Adam also worked with pianist David Durrah for multiple ye
ars\, up until his death in 2021.\n\nAs a filmmaker\, Adam has made docume
ntaries on Rahsaan Roland Kirk (how he first met Sonelius)\, Buster Willia
ms\, Andres Serrano\, Fred Tomaselli\, narrative and experimental shorts a
s well.\n$20 suggested\nDonate here in advance or in person during the per

ane Wrembel is probably the foremost interpreter of Django Reinhardt’s m
usic in North America. Whether sticking to the French master’s arrangeme

Django like a serious composer rather the cliché paragon of swing and spe

DESCRIPTION:ContraPunctus Debut Album Release Performance\n\nThe group take

ui Duvignau: bass\nHamir Atwal: drums\n\nJim Macnie says......\n"The fours
ome of clarinetist Mike McGinnis\, bassist Gui Duvignau\, drummer Hamir At
wal\, and pianist Staaf has been uniting with intermittent regularity for
a minute now\, and I’m betting dollars to donuts that their chemistry is
cohering while their book is expanding. A lot of the attraction the keybo
ardist generates is due to touch. She’s expert at weighing the value of
each new phrase and implementing them with a judicious delivery. She’s a
lso got mucho skills when it comes to making the outside seem in."\n\n"The
y’ve hit the studio since the last time I heard ’em\, and I can’t wa
it to check it because their book teems with melodies\, always a plus comp
ared to the mildly predictable riff tunes that occasionally show up on sta
ges these days. Plus\, they’re a band\, with a handful of writers and br
oader persona because of it. The three or four times I’ve caught ’em\,
Carmen Staaf\, Mike McGinnis\, Gui Duvignau\, and Hamir Atwal have tickle
d me immensely by continuously passing the ball around. A romantic tune fr
om the bassist\, an introspective piece from the pianist\, and a flight of
fancy from the reed player – their directions are many. Not to mention
that Carla Bley update. And the solos – Staaf’s a fire starter\, pure
and simple. Variety is you know what\, so get ready to be tickled yourself

DESCRIPTION:Stéphane Wrembel is probably the foremost interpreter of Djang

of swing and speed he has often been portrayed as.\nAs a composer\, Stép

d “a revelation” by Rolling Stone magazine. \nWhile his playing falls
